The ultimate comfort dish is green bean casserole, made with fresh green beans, cream of mushroom soup, cheddar cheese, and crispy French fried onions. This easy-to-make Christmas side dish takes about an hour.

Preheat oven to 350°F.Spray a 9x3-inch oven-safe baking dish with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.This category uses "Casserole" components. Prepare canned green beans by draining and setting aside.

Trim the ends and wash fresh green beans.Put fresh green beans in a big pot of boiling water with a sprinkling of salt and cook for 5-6 minutes until they turn deep green and tenderize. Stir occasionally.

Drain green beans and quickly rinse in cold water. Drain cold water and reserve green beans.Cream mushroom soup in a big bowl. Stir in milk and chicken broth.Add finely diced onion, garlic, thyme, paprika, and black pepper. Mix well.  

Add green beans, cheddar cheese, and 1 cup French fried onions to the bowl.Mix well and pour into the baking dish.Level the top with spatula.

Sprinkle 1 cup of French fried onions over the casserole, saving the other cup.Bake the dish for 20 minutes in the preheated oven until the cheese melts and the onions brown.

Divide the onion rings into rings and place them in a big basin.Soak onion rings in 2 cups milk for 20 minutes.Mix flour, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper in a medium basin. Combine with whisk.

Ready to cook? Oil a large skillet or deep fryer over high heat. Fill a skillet half-way with oil.When the oil is hot, add a handful of onion rings to the flour mixture in batches, cover, and brush off excess. Cook onion rings in hot oil until golden brown, stirring often.
