The Best Garlic Knots Recipe

The best garlic knots can elevate your next pasta, pizza, or soup dish. The herbs and garlic in these fluffy, buttery knots lend flavour to any meal.  


For the dough: – 1 cup bread flour – 1 envelope instant yeast 2 ¼ teaspoon – 1 tablespoon sugar – ¾ teaspoon fine sea salt – 1 teaspoon garlic powder – ⅔ cup warm water about 110°F – 3 tablespoons olive oil – ¾ to 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour For the garlic butter: – 6 tablespoons salted butter – 3 cloves fresh garlic finely minced or grated – ¼ teaspoon dried parsley – ¼ teaspoon dried basil – ¼ teaspoon dried oregano – Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes optional For finishing: – Grated parmesan cheese optional – Minced fresh parsley optional


Preheat oven to 400°F.  

Step 1

To make the dough:- Mix bread flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and garlic powder in a large bowl. Add oil and extremely warm water; blend for 1 minute.  

Step 2

Add all-purpose flour gradually to produce a soft dough. A shaggy ball of dough should form.   

Step 3

Knead for 8 minutes on a well-floured surface, adding flour if needed, until smooth and elastic. Rest dough for 10 minutes under a clean kitchen towel.  

Step 4

To make the garlic knots:- Let the dough rest while you melt butter. Let the butter infuse with garlic and herbs while you work on the knots.  

Step 5

Divide dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 7-8-inch rope. Knot the rope gently and set on a parchment- or silicone-lined baking pan. Repeat with all dough.  

Step 6

Cover the pan loosely with a clean kitchen towel and let rise for 30 minutes in a warm, draft-free environment until the knots double in size.  

Step 7

Brush just over half the garlic butter on the knots (re-heat if needed). Bake until golden brown, 13-15 minutes.  

Step 8

Apply the leftover garlic butter (rewarm if needed) immediately. Add grated parmesan and fresh parsley if preferred.
